BETTER WITH BLOOD
Blood is a vital but limited resource. Conserving blood and optimizing the use of blood products is thus a growing concern among caregivers worldwide.
Patient Blood Management is key. It is an evidence-based approach to optimizing the care of patients’ blood. This includes opportunities to minimize blood loss and avoid the inappropriate use of blood. [1]
Patient Blood Management, worldwide and at Radiometer
Patient Blood Management is a holistic approach to handling blood. It covers patient evaluation and clinical management on transfusion decision-making processes. It addresses the aspects of minimizing blood loss and optimizing patient red cell mass. [1]
The World Health Organization (WHO) identifies practices that compromise patient safety. These include unsafe transfusion procedures and errors at the patient’s bedside. WHO urges member states to implement potential solutions in order to minimize transfusion errors and promote patient safety. [2]
Radiometer is stepping up to the plate with solutions for Patient Blood Management.

The importance of minimizing blood loss
About two thirds of patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) are anemic, and the prevalence reaches up to 95% on their third day at the ICU. The exceptionally high transfusion rates among critically ill patients at the ICU are thus unsurprising. [3]
Red blood cell transfusion (RBCT) is the cornerstone in correcting anemia, but it is an overused procedure with its own risks and costs. A preventive approach is vital—anemia can be prevented by applying simple measures rather than resorting to transfusion. [3, 4]
A solution to this problem is to draw only the necessary amount of blood for the test. You can achieve reduced blood draws for lab analysis by lowering the frequency of sampling and by using the smallest collection tube size required for the analysis. [3, 4]

The importance of reducing blood transfusions
Blood transfusion is one of the most expensive treatments in practice, and it is usually underestimated in cost. [5]
98% of all cases of red blood cell transfusion can be predicted when analyzing preoperative hemoglobin level, blood loss and the transfusion trigger. Hence, these parameters are crucial. Getting accurate hemoglobin results is vital in making clinical decisions about RBCT. [6]
Through Radiometer’s Patient Blood Management solution, you get accurate hemoglobin results in order to support your clinical decisions on blood transfusions.
